New Delhi: The Food Security Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Monday after an eight hour long debate. The Bill will now be sent to the President for ratification. It was up for discussion in Rajya Sabha after it was passed in the Lok Sabha in the previous week.
"Importance is that this is people's legal right. Nobody needs to go before the state or Central government with a begging bowl. Nothing is perfect, let us start implementing it. At the time of implementation if there are problems we will find a solution," Food Minister KV Thomas said after getting the approval for the Food Security Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
The government is now set to push other pending bills in the last week of the monsoon session of Parliament. It is aiming to introduce the Pensions Bill in Parliament on Tuesday to overhaul the old age income security schemes offered by the government.
The Land Bill which seeks to provide greater consensual power and compensation to land owners in land acquisition processes is also expected to come up for debate in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha last week.
