The Google Nest Hub (2021) smart display has been launched in select markets with new sleep features and improved audio. The latest-gen smart display succeeds the original Google Nest Hub that debuted in 2018. Google says the second-generation device is also designed to address health-related queries. The software giant adds that the Google Nest Hub (2021) display is made of recycled materials and its plastic components contain 54 percent recycled post-consumer plastic. It comes in four colour options of Chalk, Charcoal, Sand, and Mist.
In terms of pricing, the second-generation Google Nest Hub carries a price tag of $99.99 (approx Rs 7,250). Customers in Australia, Canada, Germany, France, the UK, and the US can pre-order the new smart display via Google Store and other retailers. Google is yet to share availability details of the Google Nest Hub (2021) for markets like India. The original Google Nest Hub is currently available in India at Rs 7,999, but some e-retailers are offering Rs 500 discount.
The overall design of the new Google Nest Hub (2021) is somewhat similar to the original model. It features a glass display that can also work as a digital photo frame. In a blog post, Google says the latest device uses the same audio technology as Nest Audio and has 50 percent more bass than the original Hub. It supports music streaming platforms like YouTube Music, Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora. Customers can control music or videos through air gestures. The company says that the US variant packs an on-device machine learning chip that moves some Assistant experiences from the data centres directly onto the device, so responses to common commands become faster over time.
The second-generation Nest Hub has a camera-free design and packs Sleep Sensing – an opt-in feature to help users understand and improve their sleeping patterns. Sleep Sensing uses Motion Sense (powered by Soli low-energy radar technology) to analyse how the person closest to the display is sleeping, based on their movement and breathing — all without a camera or wearable. The technology can also detect sleep disturbances like coughing and snoring or the light and temperature changes in the room with Nest Hub’s built-in microphones and ambient light and temperature sensors. Google says Google Nest Hub (2021) users will receive a personalised sleep summary on the display. They can ask for the data by saying, ” Google, how did I sleep?”
Additionally, Google says the Sleep Sensing is completely optional with “privacy safeguards in place.” There’s also a visual indicator on the display that will let users know whether the feature is on.
