New Delhi: Pushing ahead its plans of producing original content for its video service YouTube, Google is all geared up to open its production house in Mumbai.
The search giant’s first production facility in India, YouTube Space, is the second of its kind in Asia and will be hosted by the Whistling Woods International film school and serve as a launch pad for aspiring YouTube stars.
A report on Tech Crunch notes that the first YouTube Space project started in 2012 and has been designed to give YouTube filmmakers a place where they can access high-quality equipment, gain mentorship and, ultimately, produce quality content.
The YouTube Spaces are used to host training programs, workshops and other events to encourage creativity among the local and national community.
David Macdonald, Head of YouTube Spaces in Asia Pacific, said in a blog post “India is seeing an emergence of a new generation of YouTube creators who are capturing the color, music, humour, and drama of India more creatively than ever before. In fact, Indian creators are now amongst the top contributors in Asia when it comes to driving time spent on YouTube watching videos."
The YouTube Space in Mumbai is the seventh worldwide.
Recently, the Google-owned video service hired former MTV executive Susanne Daniels to join its division that works toward creating original online series.
As YouTube's competitors Netflix Inc and Amazon.com Inc are getting aggressive toward producing original online series and independent low-budget films, the Google service is also headed the same direction and launch its own paid-video service that will offer ad-free original content.
