Leaks about the next-generation Nexus phones have been coming out ever since Google was first reported to be working with LG and Huawei for the new Nexus handsets. While we have heard almost everything, from the launch date to specs, about the rumoured Nexus devices, a new set of leaks adds further credibility to the existing rumours about what they could be named.
With less than a week to go for the new Nexus unveilings on September 29, Android Police says to have got their hands on the images of the retail packaging of both the handsets. What the images show, the Huawei-made Nexus could be called the Nexus P, while the one that is being manufactured by LG could be labelled Nexus 5X.
The packaging shows that the Nexus 5X would come in a rectangular box and the 6P would have a box with rounded corners. Both packages seem to have cutout of their "X" and "P" designations on the boxes.
The Nexus 5X and 6P, reportedly, will replace the current Nexus 5 and 6 developed by LG and Motorola. Although it is a repeat collaboration between the South Korean manufacturer and Google for a 5.2-inch screen smartphone, it is a first for Chinese brand Huawei, which will introduce a 5.7-inch phablet. For Google, it marks a revival of better relations with China, a country where its services are regularly blocked by authorities.
Each year since 2010, Google has introduced Nexus smartphones free of additional manufacturer interfaces and able to be unlocked in order to customize the phone. Not surprisingly, each new model is also the first to function under the latest Android operating system. This year the new system, Android 6.0, is named Marshmallow.
The devices are set to be unveiled by Google in San Francisco on September 29, along with the final version of Android Marshmallow (6.0). The new operating system was briefly presented during the Google I/O conference on May 28 in San Francisco. The new version of Android does not introduce any revolutionary functions though several hundred updates allow for better stability and make the phone easier to use. The idea is to optimise the smartphone's battery life as well as the security parameters of applications and their permission to gain temporary access to the camera, microphone or GPS function.
Google will also inaugurate Android Pay, a mobile payment solution that requires saving credit card details on your phone, along the lines of Apple Pay, as well as including USB Type-C compatibility. As with every new system launch, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be rolled out progressively, depending on each model, over the fall.
Google could also take advantage of the occasion to launch a second generation version of Chromecast, the key that allows content from various mobile devices to be cast on an HD television set. According to the most recent rumors, the key would be able to integrate Spotify and could manage feeds from social networks.
