Black comedy thriller Saltburn has been creating a buzz after it was released on Amazon Prime on December 22, weeks after its theatrical release on November 17, 2023. The film written, directed, and produced by Emerald Fennell, captured the attention of people for its scandalous and bold plot. It stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and Alison Oliver and revolves around a wealthy family in the UK and their downfall. Now a scene from the film, that involves actor Barry Keoghan dancing across a mansion to the 2001 hit Murder on the Dancefloor, has inspired a TikTok trend.
The trend known as the “Saltburn trend” involves a person running through their lavish properties as Murder on the Dancefloor plays in the background.
In response to this trend’s popularity, many people are taking to social media to talk about how the people participating in the show of wealth through the “Saltburn trend” are missing the point of the movie, which many believe was a criticism of the ultra-rich.
I can’t wait for the other Saltburn trend where middle & lower class drive the rich to off themselves! https://t.co/EiUxdxYeSX— Tyler Jacobs (@TJ_Wiggles) January 2, 2024
it’s funny seeing rich people do the ‘saltburn trend’ even though said rich people in the movie were murdered out of their own estate— ???????????????????????? (@taylorjane___) January 2, 2024
the saltburn trend is so damn annoying what happened to hating and eating the rich ?— Kurt Cobain’s divorced father (@playb0icartier) January 3, 2024

"Saltburn gave rich people a trend to do" was what my sleep paralysis demon told me he would say when he comes to haunt me in my waking life https://t.co/sxmNBhqnmo— Jean-Paul Blartre (but pronounced 'Blart-ruh')☭ (@smthngthftsme) January 2, 2024

watched saltburn. gunna say, if you try to make a movie about class that results in creating a tiktok trend for the ultra rich, that's probably more an indictment on ur film than some gen z kids who are just vibing on the nostalgia value of a film with little else to offer x— Ⓐnna (sober era) (@tescovaluepunk) January 3, 2024
this trend in and of itself is proof that saltburn had zero actual class commentary https://t.co/Z2ELV2xVaV— wizard of loneliness (@amirasucks) January 2, 2024

However, amidst the backlash many people defended the trend and argued that the purpose of this trend is to simply flex one’s wealth and it should not be needlessly complicated. A person opined that they like watching the rich people show off their expensive lifestyle as it offers them escapism.
Some people also used the trend’s popularity to criticize the movie for failing to impart any message about wealth equality and only serving shock and aesthetic value. Making this point, an X user wrote, “This trend in and of itself is proof that Saltburn had zero actual class commentary.”
