TV shows and films have often shown conflicts between a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law. While the script is completely dramatised for pure entertainment purposes, more often than not, it reflects reality. Recently, a similar case came to light from Muzaffarpur in Bihar. Two daughters-in-law assaulted their mother-in-law over a small matter. It has left the people around quite shaken up.
An elderly couple, Jaypati Devi and her husband Vishwanath Shah, lived alone at Jirati Tola, Gulab Patti Panchayat in Muzaffarpur’s Sahebganj area. The couple have two sons, Akhilesh and Shashikant, who work abroad and are married. The wives left the in-laws alone after two years of marriage and moved into their maternal homes.
As per reports, more than a month back, the daughters-in-law moved back into their in-laws’ house and began cooking and eating separately without asking the elderly couple. One morning, the hand pump in the courtyard broke, which led to a dispute in the family. The daughters-in-law got into a heated argument with their in-laws over the issue of land share. Things escalated and the daughters-in-law ended up thrashing their husband’s mother, Jaypati Devi. She sustained injuries and was admitted to the nearby hospital.
In an interview with Local18, father-in-law, Vishwanath Shah talked about the incident. He shared that the hand pump in the courtyard had broken. Seeing this, the daughters-in-law demanded it to be repaired or else they would break it completely. This led to a fight between the elderly couple and the two women and then ended up beating Jaypati Devi. The father-in-law allegedly claimed that the daughters-in-law just wanted a share in the land and their sons’ earnings as well. He added that he and his wife are not provided with food nor taken care of. They do not even get a share in their own sons’ earnings. He also alleged that the two women lived with their children in their maternal homes, leaving the elderly couple alone.
