BTS Star Suga Driving To India? Fans Puzzled By Translation Error In Apology
Originally, Suga’s message was meant to express regret for the incident, but the inaccurate translation brought India into the mix out of nowhere.

BTS’s Min Yoongi, popularly known as Suga had reportedly issued an apology to his fans on Sunday. The apology came in the wake of a drunk-driving incident involving the South Korean rapper. This time, it was not the incident itself that caught everyone off guard – it was the translation of his apology, which somehow referenced a trip to India. The confusion originated from a translation provided by Weverse, a South Korean app that BTS uses to communicate with fans. In the translation, Suga supposedly mentioned making “the mistake of driving to India on an electric scooter after drinking.”

Naturally, this odd reference to India set off a wave of confusion among BTS’s devoted fanbase, known as ARMY, particularly those based in India.

To clarify, here’s the translated excerpt that caused the stir: “On the night of August 6, 2024, I made the mistake of driving to India on an electric scooter after drinking. Also, I’m sorry for the confusion caused by the first apology I hastily posted on the 7th. I should have thought more and been careful, but I couldn’t.”

An Indian K-Pop and K-Drama Instagram account quickly picked up on the error, posting a video that jokingly questioned the bizarre mention. They wrote, “India mentioned but at what cost.”

The mistranslation, which oddly inserted a reference to India, only added to the confusion surrounding the situation. Originally, Suga’s message was meant to express regret for the incident, but the inaccurate Weverse translation brought India into the mix out of nowhere.

As soon as the translation was posted, fans had mixed reactions. An Instagram user shared their thoughts, saying, “I don’t understand why people are stretching it this much. He did something without harming anyone but himself, he apologised. But people are behaving as if he killed someone.”

Another user said, “I was like I’m the only one who see India there??” Many fans found the situation amusing, despite the serious nature of the apology itself.

“I was also laughing, I knew it this is not the correct translation,” pointed out a fan.

The South Korean rapper is currently under investigation following an incident earlier this month in which he was caught drunk driving an electric scooter. The incident was reportedly captured on CCTV near the Nine One Hannam apartments in Seoul. Police who responded to the scene detected alcohol on Suga, with a breathalyser test showing a BAC of 0.227%, much higher than the legally permissible limits in South Korea.
