Popular food delivery services like Zomato and Swiggy have often been criticised for their high fees, and recent increases have only added to user frustration. Amid these hikes, a customer took to X to highlight the issue, sharing a comparison between prices on the app and those at a local restaurant. The user’s pictures revealed that the same food items were nearly Rs 184 cheaper when ordered directly from Murugan Idli Shop in Chennai, compared to the higher prices on the delivery platform. This significant discrepancy left the user shocked and disappointed.
According to the pictures shared, there was a noticeable price discrepancy between ordering through Zomato and directly from the restaurant. Six pieces of Idli cost Rs 198 on Zomato, while the restaurant charged only Rs 132. For 2 Ghee Podi Idlis, Zomato priced them at Rs 132, but the restaurant offered them for just Rs 88. The Chettinad Masala Dosa was for Rs 260 on Zomato, compared to Rs 132 at the restaurant. Similarly, Mysore Masala Dosa was Rs 260 on the app but Rs 181 at the restaurant. After adding tax, the total cost on Zomato was Rs 987, whereas ordering directly from the restaurant totalled Rs 803. The user highlighted this disparity in a post, writing, “My uncle ordered food from Murugan Idli Shop. See the price difference between Zomato and actual.”

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “Murugan Idli has to pay commission for Zomato or whichever platform they are in.”
Yes coz murugan idly has to pay commission for Zomato or whichever platform they are in. So they add up their price and put it so that whatever they charge in their outlet will be received to them via online order. Mark up amount will be paid to the platform provider— Rangaprasad (@rangarulez) July 16, 2024
Another shared, “Swiggy/Zomato not an NGO, they need a minimum of 20% profit.”

Since the user shared their complaints on X, it has garnered over 2 Lakh views.
Zomato and Swiggy have both raised their fees by 20%. The Deepinder Goyal-led organisation raised eyebrows after they increased its platform fee to Rs 6 per order. Swiggy followed their footsteps to stay competitive and boost profits in the market.
