Women’s safety in cities has been one of the most debatable topics on social media over the past few years. Several posts and videos on harassment of women in public places often hit the headlines, triggering an outrage. In a similar incident, recently a 22-year-old female post-graduate student shared her ordeal while travelling in Delhi Metro in a Reddit post.
In her post, she accused an elderly man of touching her inappropriately while travelling in Delhi Metro. She further revealed that the gesture by the accused left her “disgusted and scared”.
According to the woman, she was travelling towards Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station on the Yellow Line when the incident took place. She was in a common compartment and offered a seat to the old man as her destination was nearby.

“He looked kinda old and I was literally giving him my seat to sit on as my station was arriving. He sort of lingered for a while looking at that empty seat and I instinctively felt something seemed odd for a moment,” the woman wrote in the Reddit post.
She stood up immediately and was heading towards the metro gate when the man allegedly touched her back inappropriately. “When I began moving towards the metro gate he grazed his hand over my a**. I swear to god I froze. That’s all,” the woman added in the post. She then saw that her fellow passenger was going towards the adjacent compartment.
“The moment I realised what had happened and turned around to see his face he was fleeing towards the next coach. (The Women’s Coach, mind you) that is how I knew that this was no accident. I just felt so disgusted. I was so scared to get off at my station and stayed back in the metro for a good 5 minutes till everyone had boarded off,” she explained further.
At the end of her post, she noted, “It just felt so dirty. My day is thoroughly ruined and now I will be anxious for quite some time travelling in the metro…this really made me scared for my safety for the first time in the metro.”
The post caught the attention of many Reddit users, who expressed their anger in the comment section. One of them wrote, “Ever since I have been active in these social apps, especially Reddit…One thing I have learnt is every girl of whatsoever age group is being harassed, and molested openly in public places most of the time by these middle-aged and old people… I am starting to feel disgusted and ashamed of such inhuman acts.”
Echoing the same sentiment, a user commented, “I have also noticed that nowadays old people are becoming more and more perverts. Young men are being more respectful and mindful as far as I have noticed.”
A person felt that women facing such kind of harassment should “react immediately and scream” to draw the attention of the other passengers. Another individual hoped “This should never happen to anyone.”
The post has received more than 400 upvotes since being dropped on the social media platform.
