Elon Musk, the owner of SpaceX, has made a bold prediction about the human colonisation of Mars. He asserts that within the next 20 years, humans will establish a settlement on Mars, and within 30 years, a thriving civilisation will emerge. This statement follows his recent comments on four concerns raised by Google’s AI bot, Gemini.
In response to a tweet on his X platform, which said “We are just a few years away from landing on Mars”, the 52-year-old tweeted, “Less than 5 years for uncrewed, less than 10 to land people, maybe a city in 20 years, but for sure in 30, civilisation secured.” Musk did not provide detailed explanations. Notably, Google’s Artificial Intelligence bot recently developed a four-step guideline for life on Mars.

The bot named Gemini has outlined four primary concerns that humans must address to live on Mars. The priority is to solve the housing issue. Mars is a barren planet with a cold, dry and thin atmosphere. This means there is no breathable air, and in addition to the extreme temperatures, there is constant exposure to harmful radiation from the sun.
The second challenge on Mars will be resource collection, primarily obtaining water and oxygen for breathing. Water is only found frozen at the poles, and the atmosphere contains almost no oxygen. Additionally, the lack of a substantial atmosphere and adequate sunlight makes food production very difficult, as there are no existing plants or animals. The fourth and final challenge is space travel, which still faces many unresolved issues. While NASA, SpaceX and other space agencies are conducting intensive research to address these problems, Musk remains confident in achieving his goals. In February, Musk shared his “game plan” to relocate one million people to the Red Planet. He, however, stopped short of giving a deadline.
