For the past few days, most areas in Chhatarpur have been experiencing continuous rainfall, causing various problems for the residents. Meera Raikwar from Sarwai Gram Panchayat is facing the most difficulties due to the rain. Her house is entirely made of mud and tiles, which are heavily affected by the rain. She has a small, raw room where she cooks and sleeps. In an interview with Local 18, Meera Raikwar shared, “I have been living in this raw house for years. Most of my house has collapsed, and now only a small room remains where I cook and sleep. During the rain, this room also starts leaking, making the stove wet, and I can’t sleep all night. I am forced to sleep on the floor, and there’s always a risk of snakes or scorpions coming in.”
Meera explains that the condition of her house is so bad that if a guest comes over, there isn’t even a place for them to sit. She has just one room, which isn’t enough even for her, so the question of accommodating anyone else doesn’t arise. According to Meera Raikwar, her house was once fully constructed, but other rooms collapsed due to the rain, leaving only one room, which could also fall at any time. She says, “I have put up a plastic sheet, but the monkeys break the tiles, causing water to leak during the rain.”
Meera Raikwar has not yet received the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, even though she is eligible for it. Puran Prajapati, another resident of Sarwai village, also lives in a raw house with his family. He too has not received the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Due to the recent heavy rainfall, one of the walls of his house collapsed. Puran makes clay pots for a living. Meanwhile, Sarwai’s Sarpanch Krishna Sahu mentioned that he was unaware of this issue but now that he knows, he will do his best to ensure that both Meera and Puran receive houses under the housing scheme.
