A Las Vegas hotel is facing legal trouble after a man from California, Michael Farchi, complained about an unusual incident. Farchi alleged that he woke up in extreme pain, as if someone was stabbing him with a sharp object, only to discover that his testicles were stung by a scorpion, who he found on his underwear, during his stay at The Venetian Resort. Shocked by the incident, Farchi decided to immediately check out of the Sin City resort, where he was staying with his family. The hotel waived the $400 a night room charge and the man, after snapping a few pictures of the terrifying creature, went to a local hospital for the sting treatment. Despite filing a complaint with the hotel staff, Farchi is now considering legal action and nobody has answers about how the scorpion ended up in his room.
In a conversation with 8 News Now, the victim said, “I went to the restroom and I saw a scorpion hanging on my underwear." When questioned if he or the hotel staff knew how the arachnids found its way into his hotel room, he replied, “They don’t know. I didn’t even ask how it got in the room, nobody told me about any option and it just was under my cover. Everybody wasn’t shocked, I mean, nobody believed, even I couldn’t believe."
His lawyer Brian Virag added, “When you check into a hotel you expect to be safe. I’m certain that the Venetian like every major hotel, has policies and procedures in place to try to avoid something like this, however this one thing to have policies and procedures in place it’s another thing to make sure they’re followed."
Meanwhile, the news portal received an official statement from The Venetian Resort which said, “The resort has protocols for all incidents and we can confirm they were followed in this incident."
According to ABC7, Michael Farchi has alleged that he continues to experience medical problems months after the incident and asserted that he was stung at least 3 or 4 times by the venomous creature. The specific species of the scorpion remains unclear, however, pictures provided by the man and his attorney revealed that the scorpion was approximately an inch long.
The Mayo Clinic reports that there are over 2,000 scorpion species worldwide, with about 100 capable of producing venom that can be deadly. While their stings are known for their extreme pain, they are rarely serious. According to the clinic, scorpions are generally more active at night and harm the person only if provoked or attacked. Most stings happen accidentally when individuals grab, step or brush against the scorpion. Meanwhile, Bark scorpions, the only scorpion species in the US, can cause severe issues.
Last month, The Venetian Resort was on the news when it was identified, along with Encore, Excalibur Hotel & Casino and Mirage, as one of the four hotels in Las Vegas where guests discovered bed bugs, which was confirmed by the Southern Nevada Health Department (SNHD). These sightings were reported months before millions of visitors travelled to Sin City for the Super Bowl. The presence of bed bugs in these hotels raised concerns about the cleanliness and maintenance standards in such prominent establishments.
