Satya Nadella On How GPT-3.5 Helped An Indian Farmer: 'It Was A Powerful Moment For Me'
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared that the farmer was trying to access some government programme.

Microsoft unveiled remarkable advances in artificial intelligence (AI) during its annual developer conference, Build, which took place from May 21 to May 23, 2024. CEO and Chairman Satya Nadella enthralled the crowd with a story during the keynote address about an Indian farmer whose life was changed by technology. He narrated the story, which set the backdrop for important announcements such as improvements to services like Azure and Copilot as well as breakthroughs from Microsoft-backed firms like OpenAI.

“In January 2023, I met a rural Indian farmer who used GPT-3.5, in his own voice, to understand government farm subsidies he’d heard about on television. It was a powerful moment for me. It illustrated the incredible impact of a cutting-edge model developed on the West Coast of the United States, now being used to directly improve the life of a rural farmer in India,” Nadella was quoted by The Hindustan Times.

Furthermore, Nadella cited a developer he met in Thailand. He said he had a wonderful conversation with him, and the developer talked about his usage of Phi-3 and GPT-4.

The developer reportedly also mentioned that he used Phi-3 to optimise what he was doing with Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), as reported by Hindustan Times.

Nadella went on to mention that listening to a developer discuss this technology as a true specialist makes him very proud.

“The impact of why we are in this industry. And it’s what gives us, I would say, that deep meaning in our work,” the news outlet quoted him saying.

In January, during the World Economic Forum’s annual conference in Davos, Nadella discussed the same example of the Indian farmer with Klaus Schwab, the World Economic Forum’s founder and executive chairman.

As per the report by NDTV, Nadella explained that the farmer was attempting to access a government scheme and was initially afraid to use it, so he asked the bot (automated software app) to do so on his behalf.

He said that the bot completed the work since its creator had trained it using all of the government of India’s documents using GPT [General Purpose Technology] and then developed it using speech recognition software.

Microsoft made two significant AI announcements at the Build 2024 conference. First, developers now have access to OpenAI’s most powerful model yet, GPT-40. This cutting-edge tool is expected to revolutionise AI capabilities.

Second, Microsoft launched Phi-3-Vision, a new Small Language Model (SLM) with exceptional visual reading and comprehension capabilities.
