If disturbed or threatened, the fish sticks up the spines and can poison you.

Food lovers across the world love to eat various kinds of cuisines. Many love seafood and have in-depth knowledge about various kinds of fish and what to pair them with. At times, people try to experiment with fish that can prove to be absolutely fatal. There is one fish which is highly venomous and there is no cure for their poison. You should never step on it, as it could kill you with its venom. We are talking about Stonefish. In fact, just touching it could kill you. These are the most venomous fishes known and its sting can be quite fatal to humans. It can be found in the coastal regions of the Indo-Pacific region. Stonefishes have potent neurotoxins, which are secreted from the glands of their needle-like dorsal fin spines. If disturbed or threatened, it sticks up the spines and can poison you. The fish gets its name from its grey and mottled camouflage that is similar to a stone.

If a swimmer is not careful, they may unknowingly step on them, which would result in a sting that can inject an amount of venom that is proportional to the amount of pressure applied to it.

The sting can cause intense pain in humans, followed by respiratory weakness, damaged cardiovascular system, convulsions and paralysis, and sometimes even death. As per reports, the application of heat and antivenom are the two most recommended treatments. Antivenom is used in just extreme cases. On some beaches in Australia, vinegar is also applied.

Surprisingly, despite its venom, the fish is edible for humans if prepared properly. The venom contains a certain protein that breaks down quickly when heated. It can be served as a part of sashimi and is considered to be harmless if the dorsal fin, which contains venom, is removed.

It is considered to be a delicacy in Japan, the southern part of Fuji, Guangdong in China, Hong Kong and a few parts of Vietnam.

The meat of Stonefish is white, dense and sweet and generally cooked with ginger to make a clear soup.
