This Tribal Community In Mount Abu Choose Life Partners At A Fair
Among Mount Abu tribals, the news of the couple running away from their native place is conveyed to their families by relatives.

Mount Abu, one of the popular hill stations in Rajasthan, dominates the headlines due to their unique traditions. As per Local 18, the tribals living here marry according to their choice. They dress up in the best of their clothes and search for prospective life partners at a fair. When these people find someone they like, they elope from that place.

The news of the couple running away from their native place is conveyed to their families by relatives. After mutual consent between both families, the boy and girl tie the nuptial knot. On occasions, when there is no mutual consent, the children of this couple play drums at their parents’ wedding. It is because due to no consent by the parents, the couple have to live together in a relationship and their children get them married. At the fair, the tribals also try to resolve their quarrels in the presence of elders and Panch Patel.

Another tradition which makes the tribals living in Mount Abu a part of the news is how they overcome grief. The people of these indigenous tribes are immersed in the ashes of their forefathers (Pitru Tarpan) as a part of the religious ritual. Besides Rajasthan, Adivasis from other places participate in this event in large numbers. Post Pitru Tarpan, young men and women end the mourning in their homes by dancing and singing. At this moment, the matrimonial alliances between the men and women are also finalised. Some of the people also opt for love marriages and the society also allows them to live as per its traditions.

Besides these rituals, another factor which is the centre of attention in Mount Abu is the Nakki Lake. This lake is located in the centre of Mount Abu and is considered sacred by tribal communities like Pushkar and Ganga. Throughout the year, the ashes of dead relatives are preserved and on Buddha Purnima, they are immersed in Nakki Lake with rituals. At this lake, the women also offer Tarpan for the peace of the souls of their family members. It is an artificial lake at a height of 4000 feet above sea level.
