With a dollop of butter and some coconut chutney, nothing beats soft and fluffy idlis as the first meal of the day. Idlis, originally from South India, has become one of the most popular choices in many parts of India. Over the years, we’ve noticed several variations in these steamed rice cakes. Some of the options include traditional rice idli, rava idli, ragi idli, podi idli, plate-sized thatte idli, and more. However, a small stall in Bengaluru sells unique Chiblu Idli, which is prepared traditionally.
The video, shared by food vlogger Amar Sirohi on Instagram, shows how these small, fluffy steamed rice cakes are prepared. The ingredients used to make these idlis are common, but the utensils and the method used are entirely different. The footage begins with a man pouring thick idli batter into small chiblus (handmade bamboo baskets). He then fills the steamer with water and places a few bamboo sticks inside it. Next, he places the idli-batter-filled chiblus onto the sticks in the steamer. He repeats this process, adding more layers of sticks and chiblus.
Along with the plain idlis, he also pours vegetable masala idli batter into the chiblus and places them on the topmost layer. Once all the tiny chiblus are inside the steamer, he covers it with a cloth and then a lid. After a few minutes, the fluffy idlis are ready, and he serves them with coconut chutney.
The caption of the video reads, “Unique CHIBLU IDLI of South India.” The video has garnered more than 13 million views and 80,000 likes.
Food lovers flooded the comments section with their thoughts on how the idlis were prepared. One user wrote, “Arre wah…this must be so good,” while another user wrote, “Need to try this.” A comment reads, “Yes we used to do this in Namma Karnataka. Adding a spicy chutney will give you the perfect taste.” “Appreciate we feel good that eco-friendly concept is there for food preparation instead of aluminium vessels,” wrote another user. Another user shared, “This is now on my wish list.” Many netizens requested the vlogger to mention the location of the stall in the comments section.
