A bus conductor was attacked by at least five men who claimed he had verbally harassed a female passenger on the bus.

Public transportation is supposed to be a safe option for people to commute. But more often than not, these transports have witnessed violent outbreaks that raise questions in the minds of citizens. Recently, an untoward incident took place on a bus in Tamil Nadu. A bus conductor was brutally attacked by a group of at least five men who claimed he had verbally harassed a female passenger on the bus. The event occurred in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, and the brutal assault was captured on the bus’s CCTV camera.

In the CCTV footage, which has gone viral on social media platforms, the attackers are seen punching the victim, who is seen trying to protect himself from the assault and pleading with the attackers to stop. The men continue to pummelled the conductor inside the crowded bus while some passengers stare in shock, and others try to pull the attackers off of him and stop the assault.

According to an India[dot]com report, the bus conductor is named Mookaiyan. He had a verbal fight with a female passenger after missing her stop at Varaganeri Chulaikarai Mariamman shrine. The private bus operated on the Chathiram-Thuvakudi route. The conductor had left her off somewhat further than her intended destination, resulting in a squabble between him and the passenger. Reportedly, when the bus returned to the Chathiram bus terminal, five men boarded and beat him up, accusing him of misbehaviour and verbally abusing the female passenger. Following the assault, the perpetrators allegedly attempted to steal the conductor’s cash bag as well. The victim was eventually saved by some passengers on the bus, who covered him from the attackers, causing them to back down and leave him alone.

The report mentions that the conductor reported the five individuals to the police. Based on the victim’s allegation, a case has been filed against the five males, and attempts are underway to identify and arrest them.

A similar incident took place some time ago in Maharashtra. A bus conductor in Pune was injured in the head and neck after four people allegedly attacked him for not vacating women’s seats and buying tickets. According to a Times of India report, one of the suspects, named Nishan Singh, allegedly beat Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) bus conductor Maruti Jamdade with a steel ‘kada’ (bracelet), resulting in four stitches to his skull. The perpetrator was detained later. He and three of his colleagues boarded the bus and reportedly took seats intended for women.
