This video (AI generated) was reportedly made possible by ModelScope, an open-source AI tool developed by DAMO Vision Intelligence Lab, a research division of Alibaba. ModelScope is a text2video diffusion model that has been trained on millions of images and thousands of videos, allowing it to create lifelike videos based on textual prompts.

The process of creating the video was relatively straightforward. Chain drop provided ModelScope with the prompt “Will Smith eating spaghetti” and generated it at a standard rate of 24 frames per second (FPS). Subsequently, chain drop utilised the Flowframes interpolation tool to increase the FPS to 48 and then slowed the video down to half speed, resulting in a smoother and more realistic final product, reports Arstechnica.

While ModelScope has garnered attention for its innovative approach to video creation, it is not the only player in the text2video field. Other notable advancements include Runway’s Gen-2 and research projects from tech giants like Meta and Google. These developments underscore the growing interest and investment in AI-generated content.

Since gaining viral traction, the Will Smith spaghetti video has inspired a series of follow-up videos featuring other celebrities, such as Scarlett Johansson and Joe Biden, engaging in similar experiences.
