Popular British podcaster Jay Shetty, who is known for his self-help and spiritual content, is under scrutiny after claims emerged challenging the authenticity of his life story. The author of the bestseller “Think Like A Monk” is caught in a web of allegations brought forward by a damning profile done by The Guardian newspaper, purportedly exposing inconsistencies in the background story of the British Indian.
The 36-year-old hailed as a life coach was born in London to Indian parents. Shetty’s journey includes transformative experiences with monks in India during his school years. However, the investigative report by journalist John McDermott, in the prominent British daily, casts doubt on the accuracy of Shetty’s narrative. One notable inconsistency highlighted by McDermott pertains to Shetty’s spiritual awakening during business school, allegedly catalyzed by a monk’s talk.
The British journalist pointed out conflicting statements regarding Shetty’s age at the time, indicating potential discrepancies in his recollection of events. McDermott’s findings suggest that Shetty’s portrayal of his time spent in India may not align with reality. While Shetty claims to have immersed himself in monkhood for several years, associates from that period suggest otherwise, implying a shorter duration spent in India. Regarding his educational background within the Hare Krishna movement, Shetty has been reserved, possibly due to controversies surrounding the organisation.
McDermott’s investigation also touches upon allegations of plagiarism against Shetty, with creators accusing him of reposting their content without permission or compensation. McDermott raises concerns about the credibility of the Jay Shetty Certification School, a self-help course endorsed by Shetty. The Guardian report also reportedly exposes discrepancies in the school’s accreditation claims, prompting scrutiny over its legitimacy and adherence to regulatory standards.
Responding to the allegations, representatives of Shetty’s legal team provided explanations regarding the school’s accreditation status. However, conflicting statements from accrediting bodies cast doubt on the institution’s credibility, several reports said. Notably, Shetty’s influence extends beyond social media, with endorsements from prominent figures like former US First Lady Michelle Obama and Matt Damon. However, the recent allegations threaten to tarnish his reputation.
