Russia-Ukraine Conflict: India Says Recent Developments Can Undermine Stability In The Region
Indian envoy to the UN TS Tirumurti said that India is concerned regarding the recent developments between Ukraine and Russia and fears it can challenge stability in the region

India on Tuesday at the United Nations said that the escalation of tensions between Russian and Ukraine along the eastern regions of Ukraine is of deep concern. India’s envoy to the UN TS Tirumurti said that the developments have the potential to undermine peace and security of the region.

The Permanent Representative of India to the UN also said that India is calling for restraint from all sides. “ The immediate priority is de-escalation of tensions taking into account the legitimate security interests of all countries and aimed towards securing long term peace and stability in the region and beyond,” Tirumurti said.

He also said that diplomatic dialogue is the only way to resolve the current crisis. Tirumurti highlighted India’s concerns saying that a military escalation cannot be afforded. He also said that tension can be diffused by giving space to recent initiatives undertaken by parties which also include diffusing the situation through the Trilateral Contact Group and under the Normandy format. Tirumurti also highlighted that the Minsk Agreements signed earlier may provide a basis for a negotiated and peaceful settlement.

Tirumurti also highlighted that the safety of Indian students in Ukraine’s educational institutions is of paramount importance and their well-being is a priority. “More than twenty thousand Indian students and nationals live and study in different parts of Ukraine, including in its border areas. The well-being of Indian nationals is of priority to us,” Tirumurti said.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated when Russian president Vladimir Putin recognised Donetsk and Luhansk as independent regions. Vladimir Putin late on Monday announced that Russia is recognising the separatist held regions in eastern Ukraine.

“I consider it necessary to take a long overdue decision to immediately recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic. I ask the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to support this decision, and then to ratify the treaties of friendship and mutual assistance with individual republics,” Putin said while announcing that Russian forces will enter the region as peacekeeping forces.
