Kochi Metro Feeder Autorickshaws To Soon Accept Online Payments
According to KMRL officials, this is the first time auto rickshaws in Kerala have installed point of sale (POS) terminals to receive payments.

Kochi Metro feeder auto rickshaws will be accepting credit or debit cards as well as UPI apps to pay fares.

On May 13, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) managing director (MD), Loknath Behera will launch the new project at an event in Pathadipalam. According to the Times of India, fares can also be paid with the Kochi1 Card.

As per the KMRL officials, this is the first time auto rickshaws in the state have installed point-of-sale (POS) terminals to receive payments. Consumers will be able to access digital receipts detailing their travel and fares. Furthermore, the officials stated that this will help to ensure fare transparency.

The project is being carried out with the assistance of the Ernakulam Jilla Auto Drivers Cooperative Society and OneDi Smart Mobility, according to officials. On May 10, Google and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) announced a partnership that will enhance digital ticketing choices for metro riders.

According to TOI, Google Wallet provides fast and secure access to everyday essentials, allowing individuals to conveniently save and retrieve vital digital documents such as airline passes, loyalty cards, movie tickets, and more. Additionally, Prudent Technologies, a communication services provider, is driving the integration of Google Wallet and KMRL services.

The 28-km mass rapid transport system was put into service in 2017. KMRL MD, Behera said at the launch of the new digital ticketing option for commuters on Friday in Kochi that the integration of Google Wallet into the metro’s ticketing system marked a significant milestone.

“The collaboration represents a leap forward in enhancing the travel experience for metro users, providing them with a streamlined and convenient way to access tickets and navigate in the metro. This will hopefully be extended to Water Metro ferries as well in the coming days. Commuters have already been using other options like WhatsApp ticketing to travel in the metro,” KMRL MD, Behera said as quoted by The Hindu.

Meanwhile, Ram Papatla, GM and India Engineering Lead, Android at Google, emphasised the importance of the launch in bringing new levels of convenience to Android users across the country, stating that the arrival of Google Wallet in India (earlier this week) marked an important milestone in Android’s India journey, bringing innovative and convenient experiences to simplify people’s lives.
