Rohit Sharma Breaks Eoin Morgan’s Record Of Most Sixes In International Cricket As Captain
Rohit Sharma has scored 234 sixes in 124 international matches for India as captain, whereas Morgan finished his career with 233 maximums in 198 matches for England.

Rohit Sharma was back in action for Team India on Friday (August 2), and during the first ODI of the three-match series between India and Sri Lanka, the 37-year-old right-handed opening batter scored an attacking fifty. The Indian captain faced a total of 47 balls to score 58 runs with the help of seven fours and three sixes.

By smacking three maximums in the series opener, Rohit broke one elite record of Eoin Morgan as captain. The right-handed batter, who was appointed as India’s full-time captain in November 2021, has now moved to the No. 1 position in the list of captains with the most sixes in international cricket.

Rohit has 234 sixes to his name in 124 matches for India as captain. Morgan, who led England to the ODI World Cup title in 2019, finished his career with 233 sixes in 198 matches. Former India captain MS Dhoni is third on the list with 211 sixes in 332 matches.

Most sixes as captain

  • Rohit Sharma (India) – 234 (124 matches)
  • Eoin Morgan (England) – 233 (198 matches)
  • MS Dhoni (India) – 211 (332 matches)
  • Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 171 (324 matches)
  • Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) – 170 (121 matches)

During the first ODI, apart from breaking Morgan’s record, Rohit also became the second Indian opener to score 15,000 runs in international cricket.

Leading six-hitter in international cricket

Rohit holds the record for hitting the most sixes in international cricket. The right-handed batter finished his T20I career with 205 sixes in 159 matches and has 84 and 326 sixes to his name in 59 Tests and 263 ODIs, respectively.

In the list of batters with the most sixes in ODIs, Rohit is third on the list, and during the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka on Sunday (August 4), he would like to break Chris Gayle’s record of 331 maximums and take the number two position.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi holds the record for most sixes in the 50-over format of the game. During his 19-year-long career, Afridi played 398 ODIs and scored 351 sixes.

Rohit, who made his ODI debut for India on June 23, 2007 against Ireland, has 10,767 runs to his name in 263 ODIs, and if he manages to score at least two runs on Sunday, then he will break Rahul Dravid’s record of 10,768 runs and become India’s fourth leading run scorer in ODIs.
