'Sunil, Sorry Varun': Murali Kartik's Faux Pas at Presentation Ceremony as he Confuses Varun Chakaravarthy With Sunil Narine
Varun Chakaravarthy won player-of-the-match award for his 2/17 against MI but Murali Karthik mistakenly referred to him as Sunil Narine, twice.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Murali Kartik mistakenly referred Varun Chakaravarthy as Sunil Narine, twice, during the post-match presentation ceremony after Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Mumbai Indians in an IPL 2024 match at Eden Gardens on Saturday night.

For his match-winning spell of 2/17 from four overs, Chakaravarthy won player-of-the-match award and as he was posing for the pictures after collecting the trophy, Kartik was explaining how the 32-year-old pipped other contenders before announcing Narine’s name.

“There were other options, other contenders but for his 2/17 at a crucial time, it is Sunil Narine,” Kartik said.

And then he again confused the legspinner with Narine to start the interview  with before quickly realising his mistake and apologising.

“Sunil, sorry Varun. Firstly you are a man of few words and you bowl with Sunil Narine who is also a man of few words but after the first wicket, you really celebrated” Kartik said referring to the dismissal of former MI captain Rohit Sharma.

Chakaravarthy then explained the reason behind is celebration.

“Yes, because I’ve never taken Rohit bhai’s wicket, I’d meticulously planned and it came off. The plan was to make him hit across the line and not through the line. It worked” he said.

When Kartik pressed on the similarity he shares with Narine, Chakaravarthy said, “Narine and I do talk. Tactically we are different, technically we are similar. There are similarities. I see what we do well, and where we are improving. Have done the same thing.”

Earlier this season, Kartik was criticised for his remark on Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Yash Dayal when he referred to the cricketer as ‘trash’ while on air.

“Someone’s trash is someone’s treasure,” Kartik said on air referring to how Dayal was let go of by Gujarat Titans before being signed by RCB.

Meanwhile, KKR have become the first team this IPL to qualify for the playoffs and they will now be aiming to secure a top-two finish to give themselves two chances to make it to the title clash.
