SC Restrains Karnataka From Declaring Half-yearly Exam Results For Classes 8 To 10
The Supreme Court restrained the state from announcing the results of the half-yearly exams for classes 8, 9, and 10.

The Supreme Court has restrained the state of Karnataka from announcing the results of the half-yearly board exams for classes 8, 9 and 10, which were scheduled for release on October 21.

The Supreme Court has ordered all schools in Karnataka’s districts not to release the results until further notice. In its interim order, the court stated that if half-yearly exams for classes 8, 9, and 10 had not been conducted in any district, they would not be held. The court also directed the state administration to submit an affidavit detailing the examination process within four weeks.

A bench consisting of Justices Bela M Trivedi and SC Sharma reiterated that board exams are conducted annually, not half-yearly. The bench addressed Senior Counsel Devadatt Kamat, representing the Karnataka government, questioning why the state was harassing students. They stressed that the government should not make this an “ego issue” and, if truly concerned about students’ well-being, should focus on opening better schools rather than controlling them.

The High Court had previously allowed the state to conduct board exams for various classes during the academic year 2023-24, reversing a March 6 ruling by a single judge that had nullified the state government’s October 2023 directive to hold these exams through the Karnataka State Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). During the recent hearing, the Supreme Court noted that no other state follows the educational model being implemented by Karnataka.

In response, the state government informed the court that it had withdrawn a circular concerning the administration of board examinations for students in classes 5, 8, 9, and 10 in seven rural districts. Additionally, according to reports from PTI, it was observed that exams had already been conducted in 24 other districts.
