A bridge constructed in the middle of an open field at a village in Bihar’s Araria district, was reportedly built at a cost of Rs 3 crore. The bridge, which lacks any connecting roads on either side, has sparked controversy and raised serious doubts about the administration’s oversight.
The bridge is part of a 3-kilometer-long road and bridge project in Parmanandpur village under the state government’s Gramin Sadak scheme.
While, the land for the bridge was acquired, but the surrounding areas required for the complete road project remain incomplete, India Today reported.
Speaking to the publication, villagers expressed their frustration, noting that the bridge was built over a dry river that only becomes problematic during the rainy season. The project was intended to provide connectivity during the rainy season, but with no road access, it has failed to achieve its intended purpose.
One resident commented, “We were very happy that this bridge was being built. Our village does not have a road so we thought they would build roads too, along with the bridge. But nothing like that happened.”
Another resident added, “Initially, the landowner agreed to hand over the land, but later he disagreed and is asking for money.”
In response to the issue, Araria District Magistrate Inayat Khan stated, “This matter has come to my notice. A report has been sought from the executive engineer in this regard. Along with this, the Sub-Divisional Officer, Circle Officer and the concerned engineer have been asked to visit the site and the area.”
