The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill was tabled in the Uttarakhand Assembly on Tuesday, paving the way for the state to be the first in India to have one after Goa, where it has been operational since the time of Portuguese rule. Following Uttarakhand, the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh also seemed keen to bring the UCC soon.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Tuesday said UCC will be introduced in the state at the right time.

“I congratulate Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami-led BJP government for introducing the UCC Bill in the State Assembly,” Maurya said, hinting that the bill will be introduced in UP soon.

On the other hand, Rajasthan Minister Kanhaiya Lal Choudhary also stated that they are making an effort to ensure that Rajasthan becomes the state after Uttarakhand to implement the UCC Bill.

“First of all, I would like to thank Uttarakhand CM Dhami. This was an important matter and the people of India were awaiting this. He initiated this Bill. We are making an effort to ensure that Rajasthan becomes the state after Uttarakhand (to implement the UCC Bill)…CM is in support of this. He has given directions for this, work will be done soon. This will be discussed in the current session and if the time is insufficient, it will be brought in the next session,” Kanhaiya Lal Choudhary was quoted by ANI as saying.

BJP MLA Gopal Sharma also extended support to bringing UCC to Rajasthan.

“We too would want the same thing that Uttarakhand wants. The beginning is from ‘Devabhoomi’. Rajasthan is the land of valour, we too support the Uniform Civil Code…We welcome it and hope that it will be done in Rajasthan too soon…” Sharma said.

UCC Bill in Uttarakhand State Assembly

The UCC Bill proposes a common law on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens irrespective of their religion in the state, excluding the Scheduled Tribes.

“With the aim of giving equal rights to the citizens of Uttarakhand, a Uniform Civil Code bill will be introduced in the Assembly today. It is a moment of pride for all the people of the state that we will be known as the first state in the country to move towards implementing UCC. Jai Hind, Jai Uttarakhand,” Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said in a post on X.

Uttarakhand government had called a special four-day session of the Assembly from Monday to table the legislation.
