AIIMS says no pay for no work
AIIMS is contesting an order that grants salary for doctors who went on a strike against reservation in May.

New Delhi: The battle between Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director P Venugopal escalated with AIIMS on Saturday contesting an order that grants salary for the doctors who went on a strike against the Government's reservation policy in May.

"It has been clarified that the orders issued by the Director, AIIMS, only pertains to the completion of the scheduled academic term of the residents," said Medical Superintendent and Officiating Faculty Incharge Dr D K Sharma.

"If any such order regarding sanction/release of salary of the resident doctors for the strike period has been issued, it is null and void since no administrative/financial approval was granted for the release of salary," he added.

AIIMS Registrar V P Gupta had on Friday said that the Director has ordered the payment of salaries for the 17-day strike period.

He said the Director had also ordered adjustment of the strike period for 17 days with effect from May 15, 2006 to May 31, 2006 against extra hours of duty performed by the resident doctors.

When contacted Sharma said the order for release of pay was "wrongfully issued" by the registrar.

Ramadoss and Venugopal have been at loggerheads with the ministry alleging that the anti-quota stir, which paralysed medical services at AIIMS, had tacit support of the AIIMS director.
