Srinagar: An army jawan was killed and two others injured in a gunfight with terrorists, who were holed up inside a mosque in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

The gunbattle broke out around 3:30 PM at Gamaru village in north Kashmir's Bandipore area, following a joint operation launched by the Rashtriya Rifles, BSF and local police.

The operation was launched after a tip off indicating the presence of a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander in the area - Salauddin.

The terrorists hurled grenades and opened heavy fire on the security forces from a house in the village where they were earlier hiding.

However, they had to shift to a nearby house when the first house caught fire in the crossfire.

When the second house also caught fire, the terrorists abandoned it and moved into a nearby mosque.

Intense firing ensued between both sides and it took the troops 18 hours to eliminate the terrorists and save the mosque from damage.

However, the army is yet to confirm whether one of the dead terrorists is in fact Salauddin.

Reinforcements have already reached the village and a tight cordon is being maintained to foil any attempt by the terrorists to escape.

What's your reaction?
