Bangalore: A popular pub in Bangalore was attacked by activists of a little-known group called ‘Karnataka Yuva Vedike’ on Saturday. Around 27 men forcibly entered the pub at around midnight and went on a rampage protesting against the 'pub culture'.

Athena—a popular joint located at the plush Leela Palace at the Airport Road attracts most of the young crowd in the city. The activists barged into the hotel around midnight on Saturday and asked the customers to leave the premises. They later went around damaging property and threatening those seated inside.

All the 27 protestors were arrested on Sunday on charges of trespassing, damage to property, intimidation and for trying to outrage the modesty of women.

The activists claimed that the pub culture was foreign to India and hence had decided to forcibly close down the pub, DCP Bijoy Kumar Singh told PTI.

The protestors also argued that the pub was running beyond the closing time and had been serving liquor. They said there was a lot of “indecent dancing” taking place within the pub premises, following which they had decided to stop the activities going on within it.

However, the allegations were baseless since the pub had the required permit and was not working beyond the stipulated timings, the police told PTI.

The pub was filled with both men and women when the gatecrashers started pushing and jostling all over the place. Police suspect that the attack could be a fallout of a business rivalry.
