Bomb hoax a prank, conclude police

The Cantonment Police have concluded that the phone call that had made the city police panicky for hours on Thursday evening was nothing but a prank involving two engineering students. But as the consequences were serious, the police registered a case against the students and later released them on bail on Friday.

The bomb threat, which caused fear at the railway station, bus stand and other crowded places in the city, had turned out to be a hoax, but the police were investigating the motive behind it. It was from the mobile phone of Nithin, a second semester Mechanical  student at Sarabhai College of Engineering, Vellanad, that the call was generated.

It was around 5 pm on Thursday that a call was received at the police control room claiming to have placed bombs at the crowded places in the city.

“It was proved that the phone call was from Nithin’s number. But it was one of his classmates, Ramanunny, who had made the call. But on investigation, it became clear that the call was made without any wrong intentions,” said Circle Inspector, Cantonment, Santhosh Kumar.

During the preparations for internal assignments, Nithin and Ramanunny were staying together. At that time, Ramanunny made a call to the control room from Nithin’s phone as a prank. But when the call connected, he was bewildered for a while and finally said that bombs had been placed at various parts in the city, without knowing the consequences, according to the police.

The police, who immediately became vigilant,  formed two teams, one to detect the ‘bomb’ and the other to find the source of the call.
