Kolkata: The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has placed the ‘Food Safety and Standarisation Law’ for approval in Parliament to ensure food safety in accordance with international standards.
Union Health Minister A Anbumani Ramadoss said that the existing Prevention of Food Adulteration Act would give way to the integrated ‘Food Safety and Standardisation Law’.
He said that the Health Ministry has embarked on a World Bank aided project to modernise the food and drug laboratories in the country to international standards by investing Rs 370 crore.
Apart from modernisation of the existing laboratories, the project would undertake setting up of new food and drug laboratories in the country to ensure safety of the food items, the minister said.
The Centre is in the process of implementing the ‘Codex’ elimination procedure as per the WTO guidelines of food safety standards.
It would also shortly bring in a notification making it mandatory to mention ingredients and nutritional values in food items to ensure safety, he said.
He appealed to the sportspersons and Bollywood stars to desist from endorsing soft drink brands, which are detrimental to children's health.
He said that the West Bengal government has identified around 10 acres of land at Rajarhat for expansion of the Chittarnjan Cancer Hospital with an investment of Rs 60 crore.
