The Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the collector and superintendent of police of East Godavari to ensure that there is no unauthorised slaughtering of animals in the district.
Justice L Narasimha Reddy, while dealing with a plea by K Veera Kumaraswami and three others of Mallisala against an unauthorised slaughterhouse in the village, directed the SP to ask sub-divisional officers to check the illegal activity.
Animals should be slaughtered only after securing licences from the departments of animal husbandry, medical and health, Panchayat Raj and local authorities.
The petitioners brought to the court’s notice that Akumarthy Venugopal was slaying animals, accumulating the waste, including bones and skin, and exporting beef to different places with the permission from the authorities concerned.
They complained that the village was stinking and they were facing a problem from vultures and stray dogs. They said that the revenue and police authorities had failed to enforce the closure of the unauthorised slaughterhouse.
After perusing the case, the judge pointed out that the photographs submitted by the petitioners clearly showed how police were negligent in taking action against the unauthorised slaughterhouse. The judge directed the authorities to seal the slaughterhouse and arrange for removal of animal leftovers.
The sale proceeds of leftovers should be utilised to meet the transportation costs and take up a disinfection drive in the village, the judge added.
