BANGALORE: India is a diverse country with many religions which face several social and economic issues. To deliberate on these issues and more, the National Council Of Churches in India (NCCI) will hold its 27th Quadrennial Assembly from April 25-28 with the theme ‘The Gospel in a groaning world’.This organisation in India is a united expression of the Protestant and Orthodox churches in India. It provides common platform for both to put across their ideas and thought by bringing together the Churches and other Christian organisations for mutual consultation, assistance and action in all matters related to life and wellness. “NCCI promotes church unity as a basis for the life and work of the church, and for the wholeness of the human community at large,” said Bishop Dr Taranath Sagar, president of NCCI.He also added that it involves in capacity building for its members to promote and involve in social action programmes and work towards equality, justice and peace. Eight parallel workshops will be held on April 26 and 27 on the issues concerning dalits, tribal communities, women, children and youth. The organisation has a women’s wing which addresses many issues related to women. Sushma Ramswami, vice-president of NCCI said, “Young women are channeled to bigger cities for economic gains. To overcome this problem we are partnering with the All India Christian Women’s Association.”The assembly will have a special focus on certain concerns like the Lok Pal bill, dalit and women reservation bills.
