The division offers textbooks, guides and other learning materials in audio CD format for the visually challenged youth. ‘’Several candidates are making good use of the facility. We are mainly approached for audio books on PSC examination materials and teacher eligibility tests,’’ said Federation general secretary R Sasidharan Pillai. The audio book division has two staff readers and some volunteers who chip in with their services occasionally. ‘’Already, we have a library of audio books for various competitive examinations and eligibility tests. However, it the book or study material is a new one, the candidate has to bring it along with a CD. There is no special charge for the service,’’ Pillai said. ‘’The most sought after audio books are those for the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET) and Teacher Eligibility Test,’’ said Mini, a staff of the audio book division. ‘’Other books in demand are those for various PSC examinations, like lecturer and high school assistant posts. Candidates preparing for the Civil Services examinations too come for help,’’ she said. ‘’The service is a great help for us,’’ said Aneesh Umman, a visually challenged youth hailing from Karakulam. Umman is preparing for the PSC special recruitment examination scheduled for October. ‘’The audio learning material, especially those on general knowledge, are highly useful,’’ Umman said. Sasidharan Pillai said an average 200 students approach the division every month. ‘’Several visually challenged students and youths from the southern districts come to the centre. In fact, only two KFB offices in the State - Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur - offer this facility,’’ Pillai said. ‘’At present, we have only two staff readers. Plans are afoot to get some more personnel to strengthen the division,’’ he added.first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
