Cops prevented Benazir autopsy, claims hospital
Board Member of Rawalpindi Hospital has said that the police chief prevented the autopsy.

New Delhi: A Board Member of Rawalpindi General Hospital has told CNN-IBN that the police chief prevented the autopsy on Bhutto’s body.

Experts at the Rawalpindi General Hospital have also said that due procedure was not followed after Benazir's death. “There is a provision about family consent before performing an autopsy, however, only a judicial magistrate can forgo the autopsy after receiving a written request,” says Athar Minallah, member of the board of management of Rawalpindi General Hospital

The decision not to conduct an autopsy on slain ex-premier Benazir Bhutto's body was taken by the Rawalpindi police chief, despite the eagerness of the doctors to perform the autopsy.

Even though a medico-legal report based on a mandatory post-mortem examination is a must in a murder case under Pakistani laws, the autopsy was avoided.

Athar Minallah, a top lawyer and a member of the board of management of Rawalpindi General Hospital told the PTI that no investigation on a death case could be completed without the doctors performing autopsy and conclusively finding the cause of death.

However, Minallah's statement runs contrary to the contention of Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema, who had said on Friday that the autopsy was not done at the request of Bhutto's husband Asif Ali Zardari.

Meanwhile, contradicting the government’s statement on Bhutto’s assassination, the Toyota officials in Islamabd say that Benazir could not have been fatally injured even if her head hit the sunroof lever of the car.

On Saturday, the government had said that Benazir died of skull-fracture after she hit her head against the sunroof lever of her vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser...

The Toyota official speaking on conditions of anonymity said that since the lever was installed inside the vehicle and was at lead six centimeters from the edge of the sunroof, it could not have caused the head injury.

Benazir Bhutto had returned to Pakistan after more than eight years of self-imposed exile. Once regarded in the West as a beacon of democratic values, Bhutto headed for a PPP rally at a park after a meeting on Thursday.

After a rapturous welcome from the huge crowd, Bhutto spoke on her pet theme of her vision for a new Pakistan. As the crowd repeatedly cheered, Bhutto, wearing a purple kurta and jacket, wound up her address, waved to the multitude and moved down the steps of the dais.

Suddenly, there was an explosion and Bhutto's bodyguards immediately bundled her into a SUV and attempted to move out of the area.

Just then, two men rode by the car on motorcycles. One of them blew himself up and even as Bhutto came out to see what had happened a sniper pumped five bullets into her neck and chest.

As the crowds ran helter-skelter, Bhutto was immediately rushed to the Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was declared dead at 6.46 pm.
