Pulling up a city-based college for failing to implement an undertaking given to the court on extending the employment of an associate professor, the Madras High Court has imposed costs `Rs 25,000 on its secretary.
The order was passed on a writ petition filed by P Shanmugasundaram, an associate professor of History at the CBM College in Sakethapuri at Kovaipudur.
Shanmugasundaram had joined the college in September 1983 and attained the age of superannuation on December 31, 2011. However, a person retiring in the middle of an academic year was entitled to continue till the end of the session. Citing this, he had submitted a medical fitness certificate to the college authorities requesting them to extend his services till the end of the academic year (i.e. May 31, 2012).
Since the college did not act on his plea, he had moved the HC During the hearing of the petition, the college secretary had furnished an undertaking stating that the associate professor would be allowed to continue in service till May 31, 2012.
