New Delhi: A Khasi woman from Meghalaya was allegedly asked to leave the national capital’s elite Delhi Golf Club due to her dress.
A witness, Nivedita Barthakur, told CNN-News18 that she and her governess Tailin Lyngdoh, who is a Khasi, went the Delhi Golf Club for lunch as guests of a member there. Lyngdoh was wearing a jainsem, which is a traditional Khasi dress.
She said that 10 minutes into the lunch, two club employees approached Tailin and told her that she had to leave.
When asked why they were asking her to leave, they reportedly said that she looked like a maid.
Lyngdoh told CNN-News18 that she has travelled to London and UAE wearing a jainsem and never faced any trouble there.
Barthakur is an honorary health advisor to the Assam government. She told CNN-News18 that the club put immense pressure on her to not go public about the incident.
Reacting to the incident, NCW chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam said it was a shameful act.
The club was unavailable for comment.
Congress MP from Arunachal Pradesh, Ninong Ering, said, “We have raised this issue before also. I don’t know why the Golf Club could not respect the lady. When Parliament resumes, I will raise this case.”
