A 10-ft high idol of Lord Ganesh sculpted by sculptors from Kolkata is drawing scores of devotees everyday to the Hathi Talav Ground near the Ram Mandir in Mattanchery where the Ganeshotav-2012 is in progress.
The Ganesh festival began on Wednesday morning with the idol installation procession.
The festival will conclude on September 29 evening with the immersion of the idol in the sea off Fort Kochi beach.
The festival, being held under the auspices of Sri Cochin Ganesh Mandal, was inaugurated by Mata Amritanandamayi Math general secretary Swami Poornaamritananda Puri after the idol installation procession and Ganesh Homam.
The Swamiji also inaugurated an exhibition of the idols of Lord Ganesh in various postures near the Ram Mandir.
The daily darshan timing is from 5 pm to 10 pm.
The mass Maha Aarti is being performed from 8 pm after the bhajans and cultural programmes which begin at 6.
30 pm.
The colourful ceremonial procession carrying the main Ganesh idol will begin from the Hathi Talav Ground around 3 pm to the Fort Kochi Beach for immersion in the sea.
The highlight of the procession will be the cultural dance performances.
The procession will be preceded by the maha Prasadam distribution from 1 pm to all the devotees, says Cochin Ganesh Mandal president Bharat Rasiklal Shah.
“A Ganesh festival of this magnitude is being organised for the first time in Kochi this year,” Ganesh Mandal secretary Nikhil N Asher said.
The other office-bearers of the Ganesh Mandal are Jitendra Kumar Jain (vicepresident), Sanjay Bhojak (joint-secretary) and Mayur V Shah (treasurer).
Paras B Shah and Ashok Aggarwal are the committee members.
