A 28-year-old doctor was arrested in Malegaon near Nasik on Monday for allegedly assisting the Lashkar-e-Toiba militants.

Nasik (Maharashtra): A 28-year-old doctor was arrested in Malegaon near Nasik on Monday morning for allegedly assisting the Lashkar-e-Toiba militants.

Police said a huge cache of arms had been seized recently.

The accused, identified as Sharif Mohmed Shabbir Ahmed, is said to be an activist of the banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). He is a resident of Sapana Sizing in Malegaon.

Police are likely to interrogate Ahmed in connection with the car that was used by the militants on May 9 at Aurangabad.

The militants had escaped in the car when police intercepted them. A diary and a mobile phone have also been seized from his possession, the police said.

The car was found abandoned in Sayne-Shivar at Malegaon on Friday and police arrested four persons – Riyaj Ahmed Mohmed Ramjan, Mushtaq Ahmed Mohmed Issac, Javid Ahmed Abdul Maji and Afjal Khan Nabi Khan.

On Sunday at around 2330 hours (IST) in a joint operation of police and Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS), police seized six boxes, containing five AK 47 rifles, 20 magazines, 13 kg RDX and 1000 live cartridges in an electrical material shop in Nasik.

After the seizure of arms in Aurangabad and Manmad, police and ATS officials have started search of arms from Malegaon to Aurangabad.
