ROURKELA: An extortion and blackmailing racket was busted and four persons arrested on Saturday by Rourkela police. They have been identified as self-styled scribe Saroj Rout (40) and his photographer Bijay Pradhan (40), Basant Lenka - a Lance Naik of the Orissa State Armed Police - and a 21-year-old woman Pinky Sharma. Two more women of the gang are absconding. The racket came to light after a victim Kuldip Nayar was trapped and looted by them on Friday. Nayar registered a complaint with Sector-15 police leading to the arrests. Report said when Nayar was heading towards Sector-19 on his motorcycle, two women sought a lift at Bisra Square. He was then taken to a quarter at Sector-16 on some pretext by the women. As they got engaged in a chat, Rout, Pradhan and Lenka entered the quarter and threatened to publish Nayar’s photographs with the women. They also snatched ` 2,700, his motorcycle, ATM and PAN cards.Rourkela SP Himanshu Lal said in the course of investigation, police arrested four persons and seized three motorcycles, cash, video cameras and six mobile phones from their possession.Investigations revealed that the gang was involved in immoral activities, loot, extortion and blackmailing.
