The wide mobilisation of opposition parties against the Centre on a host of issues was on show in Chennai on Sunday when CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat made common cause with arch rival and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee over the UPA government’s economic reforms.

“I agree with what Mamata Banerjee said about UPA looting in the name of reforms. That is what is happening,” said Karat.

The ongoing protests against the Centre on issues like fuel price hikes, the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders and the decision to allow FDI in retail, have found parties from opposite ends of the political spectrum, from BJP to Trinamool to the Left, on the same side of the debate. It has also brought up possibility of an alternate front being formed, with possible allies tiptoeing around the matter.

Karat reiterated his party’s stand on the introduction of FDI in the retail sector. “We will not allow FDI to come up in any State,” he said.
