PARLAKHEMUNDI: The State Government on Friday launched a scheme to provide free bicycles to girl students and ST and SC boys of Class X in government and aided schools in 118 tribal dominated blocks.Nearly three lakh students would get Rs 2,600 each for buying cycles, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced while launching the scheme in Gajapati district. Each beneficiary has to physically show the cycle and submit a bill to the headmaster by January next year. “The State Government has earmarked Rs 74.40 crore for the scheme this year,” the Chief Minister said. Addressing a gathering, Naveen said education is vital for all-round development of the State. The main objective of the free bicycle scheme is to encourage students to go for higher education and increase enrolment in schools. This will also help students from faraway villages attend schools.The State Government has decided to set up 1,480 high schools, 111 model schools and 1,000 ST Girls Hostels in educationally backward districts, Naveen said.
