Prime Minister says the Government is determined to keep the surging prices of essential commodities under control.

Bangalore: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said the Government is determined to keep the surging prices of essential commodities under control and will take further measures "as and when the situation arises."

"We are determined to keep the prices under control. We have already announced day before yesterday (measures to check price rise). As and when the situation arises, further measures will be taken," he said before leaving for New Delhi after a two-day visit to Karnataka.

Concerned over the surging prices of essential commodities, the Government on June 21 banned export of pulses, allowed private players to import wheat and limited import of sugar.

Asked if the Government would disband the National Advisory Council, the Prime Minister replied in the negative. "We have expanded it. There is no question of disbanding it," he said.

Noting that NAC has done a "very useful work" and played a "very constructive role," Singh said, "it has helped us to make up our mind on important national programmes like Right to Information Bill, Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the whole area of social legislation."
