New Delhi: The Gujarat Government on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that it has decided to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the family of Ujjain resident Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was killed along with his wife Kausar Bi by a Gujarat police team in a staged shootout in November 2005.
A bench, headed by Justice Tarun Chatterjee, directed the Narendra Modi Government to pay the compensation to the mother and brother of the deceased.
The compensation would be interim. The state government had already admitted to the Supreme Court that Sohrabuddin was killed in a police encounter.
Seven senior officials including the then chief of the Anti- terrorist squad of Gujarat police V D Vanzara, are facing trial for the murder of Sohrabuddin Shaikh.
The apex court has also sought the response of the Gujarat government to its suggestion to hand over the investigation of Sohrabuddin encounter case to he Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by former CBI director, R K Raghavan.
