Incessant rains in Wayanad region of Kerala has brought smiles to the farmers in Karnataka as water in Kabini reservoir has reached its brim. As a result irrigation officials have released over 15,000 cusecs of water from the reservoir to Tamil Nadu. The water-level in Kabini reservoir reached 2,281.72 ft on Wednesday with an inflow of 19,256 cusecs.
Heavy rains in the last four days in Wayanad resulted in an increase in inflow of more than 20,000 cusecs taking water level in Kabini reservoir from 2,279 ft on Tuesday to 2,281.72 ft on Wednesday. As a result the irrigation authorities released 13,000 cusecs of water to protect the dam from any damage. This discharge of water would quench the thrust of the people in the Cauvery delta.
Meanwhile, incessant rains in Kodagu districts for past four days has increased inflow into the Krishnaraja sagar reservoir to 32,556 cusecs. The reservoir level was 87.70 ft as against maximum of 124.8 ft. The KRS level was 122 ft with 30,172 cusecs inflow and 20,256 cusecs outflow during the corresponding period.
Meanwhile, the irrigation department has issued a flood warning and alerted people in low lying areas in Kabini achukat. In Kodagu, the district administration has declared two days holiday for schools due to heavy rains. The discharged of water from Harangi reservoir is expected to increase inflow into Krishna Raja Sagara.
Power generation starts
The 2 MW hydro electricity power projects started power generation following discharge of 3,000 cusecs of water from the Kabini reservoir. The power production had come to halt in December, after the officials stopped discharge of water for irrigation and released it only for drinking purpose in Bangalore. This has also affected the Shimsha power projects and other private power projects in Malavalli taluk. Poor rains had also dried up famous Bhara Chukki and Gagana Chukki falls in Shimsha.
