PUDUCHERRY: Chief minister N Rangasamy on Thursday said a high level committee of MLAs and officials would be constituted to address issues arising out of regional reservation  granted to students of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. This, he said, was to ensure that no one was affected in any region of the UT and there was uniform development in all four regions. The issue was raised when the Chief Minister in a reply to a question from PR Siva(AINRC) from Karaikal said that regional reservation would not be applicable for admission of students to self-financing medical colleges.AIADMK floor leader A Anbazhagan opposed the concept of regional reservation and questioned the government on whether regional reservation implemented in government colleges  had the approval of government of India. He said that such a system existed  in no part of the country and added that Puducherry students were affected on account of it.E Valsaraj (Cong) from Mahe region  pointed that Puducherry was an exceptional case as education was under three different boards and there was non-uniformity in the standards of education, making it necessary. While Puducherry and Karaikal came under Tamil Nadu board seeing high percentage of marks , Mahe and Yanam regions under Kerala and Andhra Pradesh boards where the scoring is on the lower side. Valsaraj said that the previous practice of Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission of students in professional colleges has been done away with  and suggested that it could be reintroduced to solve the regional reservation issue. Even Yanam MLA (Cong) Malladi Krishna Rao was supportive of reintroduction of CET.K Lakshminarayanan (Cong), former  education minister, said it had already been decided to constitute a committee to solve the issue, but questioned what happened so far. It has been felt that due to regional reservation, students from Puducherry region had been affected, he said. Any  decision  to address issues should be based on facts and discussed threadbare before coming to a decision. Ways and means should be found  so that students of no region were affected, he said.VMC Sivakumar (ind) from Karaikal supporting the government  said there was a high court direction upholding the regional reservation and any dissatisfaction could be challenged in Supreme Court.
