NELLORE: Chairman of National Farmers Commission (NFC)M S Swaminathan stressed on the need for protecting natural water sources, keeping in view the severe water crises predicted in the near future.Speaking after releasing the brochure on the international symposium titled ‘Environmental Impacts, Health Implications and Therapeutic Approaches’ organised by Vikrama Simhapuri university (VSU) in June, to coincide with World Earth Day, here on Sunday, he wanted the government to first take adequate measures to preserve natural water resources in the country.He attributed several health hazards and viral infection, as well as the decline in agriculture area to inadequate water supply. The VSU vice-chancellor Rajarami Reddy said that scientists from 15 countries have already consented to lecture at the international symposium which will also have a special session on water quality and aquatic biotechnology.The vice-chancellor G Rami Reddy presented the ‘Paila Award’ instituted by Bengaluru based Indian Society of Bio-technology, to M S Swaminathan for his achievement in agriculture sector. (As Swaminathan could not make it to the function in Bengaluru for receiving the award on Saturday, the organisers, presented the award through VSU vice-chancellor here on Sunday). The secretary of department of science and technology, T Rama Swamy released a newsletter ‘Shruti’ brought out by VSU. Varsity registrar Narayan Reddy and others were present.
