BURLA: In a bid to install a candidate of their choice at the helm of the student’s union of the post-graduate department, authorities of Sambalpur University have landed themselves in trouble. Tension gripped Sambalpur University campus after students locked the PG departments and administrative block on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Pujari met a delegation of the students and promised to set up a new scrutiny committee to look into the nominations. Sources said three students identified as PM Krishna Das, Sadhu Charan Khamari and Subhas Barik had filed their nominations for the post of president for September 22 poll. The scrutiny committee had upheld all the nominations on Thursday. However, on Friday Barik withdrew his nomination. In addition, Khamari’s candidature was cancelled on Friday after he was declared ineligible for the post since he is having a back paper. The final list had PM Krishna Das as the sole contender. This left supporters of Khamari peeved and questioned his disqualification after a day. They accused the authorities of favouring Das and gheraoed PG Council Chairman Sarat Kumar Acharya and the scrutiny committee members demanding an explanation. The officials were allowed to move out only after the Vice-Chancellor promised to look into the issue.
