Jerusalem: Israel, a key ally of United States in the Middle East, on Monday welcomed the news of Osama bin Laden's killing, saying "it shares the joy of the American people on this historical day".

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the US operation a "resounding victory for justice, freedom, and the values shared by all democratic countries fighting shoulder to shoulder against terror."

Netanyahu, in a statement released by his office, personally congratulated the US President as well as American soldiers, saying "the State of Israel shares the joy of the American people on this historical day, that of bin Laden's

ouster."

Israel's octogenarian Nobel laureate President Shimon Peres also praised the killing of bin Laden, calling it a great achievement for the US defence establishment, US President Barack Obama and the free world, Israel Radio reported.

"Bin Laden was one of the biggest murderers in history and he received his sentence," Peres stated.

"The world can breathe a sigh of relief at seeing the punishment he received, despite the fact that justice was late in coming," he added.

Almost 10 years after the 9/11 terror strike, al-Qaeda mastermind and world's most dreaded terrorist bin Laden was killed on Monday by US forces after being hounded in a special operation in Abbottabad in Pakistan.
