HYDERABAD: The Road Transport Authority (RTA) is set to collect life tax on autos and tractors.Till now, quarterly tax was being collected on autos and tractors.The RTA sent a proposal to the state government seeking permission to collect life tax on autos and tractors as they are finding it difficult to collect the quarterly tax on the vehicles due to lack of adequate staff.There is greater scope for tax evasion in the present system, it said.After examining the proposal, the government has decided to collect life tax on autos and tractors without causing a heavy burden on vehicle owners.According to official sources, there are over 4 lakh autos and 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh tractors in the state.The RTA which invited tenders for high security numberplates, is likely to complete the process before December 9. Fixing of high security numberplates will begin from June next year. The APSRTC will install special machinery at all the RTA offices to emboss registration numbers on vehicles. The RTA will collect service charges from vehicle owners for fixing numberplates. The amount accrued from service charges will go to the APSRTC.Some states are already implementing the high security numberplate system.At a high level coordination meeting held by transport minister Botcha Satyanarayana on Friday with APSRTC and RTA officials, several issues, including life tax on autos and tractors, high security numberplates, illegal operation of bus services,were discussed.
